Viking period whetstone and ornamented iron fire striker

The object in detail.

A Viking period whetstone, which is a small piece of stone used for sharpening that included a hole so that a leather carrying strap could be tethered. The second item is a Viking period fire striker, which is a piece of carbon steel from which sparks are struck by the sharp edge of flint, chert, or similar rock. It is a specific tool used in fire making.

Provenance: Till 1965 in the private British collection of N.K. Since 1965 in a private British collection of Mr. W.L. Bought by the current owner in 2016 in London, from T.R. who had owned the item since 2000.

As it stands today.

Offered in stable, well-preserved condition consistent with its age and burial history. Surfaces retain their original character; no modern restoration beyond conservation-grade stabilisation.
