The object in detail.

Viking period iron axe, dating C.10th-11th century AD. A hand-forged iron axe head with a broad blade flaring to the curved cutting edge, with an eared socket with an triangle-shaped aperture. Such axes were called broadaxes and were mounted on a long shaft convenient for battle with two hands. For a similar example, see The British Museum, Museum number 1909,0626.8.

Provenance: Till 1965 in the private British collection of N.K. Since 1965 in a private British collection of Mr. W.L. Bought by the current owner in 2016 in London, from T.R. who had owned the item since 2000.

Offered in stable, well-preserved condition consistent with its age and burial history. Surfaces retain their original character; no modern restoration beyond conservation-grade stabilisation.
