Medieval gilded bronze Hippocampus figure, dating 14th-15th century AD.
“Hippocampus” is a mash-up from Greek—’hippos’ meaning horse, and ‘kampos’, meaning sea monster.
Often ridden by Poseidon, the god of the sea, the hippocampus in ancient art is a vision—part horse and part fish, darting through marine scenes with grace. These legendary creatures were the very chariot pullers for gods.

Provenance: Till 1965 in the private British collection of N.K. Since 1965 in a private British collection of Mr. W.L. Bought by the current owner in 2016 in London, from T.R. who had owned the item since 2000.

Offered in stable, well-preserved condition consistent with its age and burial history. Surfaces retain their original character; no modern restoration beyond conservation-grade stabilisation.
